Her old Gaelic name is taken from the beautiful Gleniffer Braes (hills) of the city of Paisley, which is near Glasgow, Scotland.

The yacht was designed by Brewer and McBryde of Vancouver, British Columbia. Gleniffer was built in Hong Kong and shipped as deck cargo on the British steamer Bellerophon, delivered to Vancouver where she was launched on May 17 1912.

The Blue Funnel steamer Bellerophon carried as cargo five Hong Kong built teak power boats. Chinese immigrants to Canada and Seattle, and also a cargo of steel ship building material that had been loaded in the United Kingdom for Victoria, British Columbia. The steel plates, angles and frames were for the building of the new Canadian Pacific Railway steamer Princess Maquinna to be built in Esquimalt. The Princess Maquinna was notable as the largest steel steamship built on the coast, and went into service in July 1913. “The good ship Maquinna,” went on to serve the hazardous West Coast of Vancouver Island for the next thirty nine years.

Bellerophon also unloaded a 62’ teak hull in Victoria, then unloaded cargo and passengers in Seattle. On arrival in Vancouver, Bellerophon moored at the dock of Evans, Coleman and Evans on May 17th, 1912. Gleniffer was the largest of the four teak power boats launched in slings from the foredeck, ready to be used. The other three were stock boats for the Canadian Fairbanks Morse Company.
